Project

Boaz: a CoreXY 3D printer, built twice

Oct 2023 – 2026

Own design · project page

  • Designed a CoreXY printer on a 20×40 extrusion frame, with a triple-belted Z axis in sheet metal and standoffs and a three-point kinematic bed.
  • Rebuilt it to machine-tool practice: dowel pins in reamed holes with pressed-idler runout under 0.001 in, rails aligned by dial indicator against granite, and a cast tooling-plate bed.
  • Met seven of eight criteria fixed before the build. Bed mesh envelope fell from 1.6 mm to 0.2 mm; a Speed Benchy printed in 16 minutes; about 100 consecutive plates ran with no first-layer intervention. Y-axis acceleration fell short of its target.
  • Ran a ten-day, 1,000-part PETG contract at about 50 parts a day, holding 0.2 mm functional tolerance on threaded parts.
  • Received $150 of electronics from Duet3D in sponsorship of the project.

Publications and presentations
